The benefits and drawbacks of the contrasting heating gas boiler variants
There are a number of kinds of Gas Central Heating Systems on the market these days. Despite the different names basically these systems usually have copper pipework, heating radiators and a gas boiler.
People in the UK, Europe and some parts of Russia, hardly need an air conditioner because of the low average temperature. Heating is more in demand particularly in the chilly wintertime, making a Central Heating System an absolute must-have for all modern houses and all those located in the United Kingdom.
With the onset of winter, heating becomes crucial to warming your home. While snowstorms rage on outside, you can be safe and warm on the inside. For this, you need a reliable central heating boiler in your Central Heating system. It should be durable, easy to use and completely safe.
Two kinds of Central Heating Systems are mainly in use; pumped/vented and sealed systems.
The vented/pumped one is more common of the two. A pumped/vented Gas Central Heating System includes components known as a feed and expansion tank to allow for the expansion of water as it is heated in the radiators. The hot water tank performs two functions; firstly, supply hot water to your house, and secondly, provides heat to the central heating radiators. The expansion tank has adequate space to accommodate any water expansion that occurs due to heat. It is normally placed at the highest place of the house like the attic area, taking up space. The hot water tank has two main functions; to heat the house and and provide hot water for washing.
A lot of older homes have pumped/vented Gas Central Heating systems.
A sealed system is now being used in the new houses that are being built. As the name suggests, sealed system is a closed system; no tank is required in this system. The attic has no tanks or piping, the system is completely enclosed and locked, it’s not ventilated, and that has its advantages:.
- Frozen loft pipes are no longer a problem.
- No maintenance work on the tank or pipes that would be in the attic in a pumped/vented system.
- The risk of a leaking water tank is all together absent.
- The air cannot enter the system as its sealed and hence there are lesser chances of sludge, corrosion and airlocks developing.
- If necessary, the system can be flushed out under pressure using the main water supply.
This central heating system is self contained incorporating all the safety devices and other important controls. No tank feeds a sealed system, the supply comes directly from the mains. There is no hot water tank, so water is drawn directly from the main supply.
Normal variations of pressure can be allowed in a sealed system through a pressure vessel that contains compressed gas; this is separated from the sealed system water by a diaphragm. The safety valve opens up when the pressure in the system rises so that water can escape through it, on the other hand it opens up when the pressure drops down so that the water can refill the system.
Gas Central Heating Systems are a worthwhile investment as they have the lowest cost of operation when compared with other types of heating. They also provide you with complete control which is much more than other heating systems can say about themselves.
