Cleaning the heating system

Cleaning the heating system

Taking the water out of a fully pumped gas central heating system makes many maintenance tasks easier. To fit a temperature metal radiator valve or replace a failed heating radiator are two examples. Your engineer will normally be performing list has although some householders do have the confidence to try this themselves.

Most often cleansing the metal radiators is in the main cause for performing at this task. The first measure you should take is to switch off the gas fired boiler and heating pump. To enable the system to totally flush you will need to check that no water is moving into the central heating system.

Your Central Heating expansion or header tank is where the water is flowed into the system. A common ballvalve is used in the expansion cylinder similar to that in a toilet. This ballvalve is a ball attached to an arm that, when raised closes the valve, which means when the cystern is full no more water can get in as the valve is closed. Water is added to the gas central heating system if the levels fall as the ball will drop on the water surface venting the valve. Water will need to be prevented from entering the gas central heating system if the Cleaning process is to complete. Placing a small plank of wood across the water cystern preventing the ball valve from moving will check further water moving into the heating system.

Now take a hosepipe emptying into an external clean and connect this to the outlet valve on the bottom of your heating radiator. The water from your metal radiator will passage through the hose and out of your metal radiator system. As there will be water in the ground floor metal radiators you will need to attach the hose pipe to one of these to see to it that the whole heating system drains. Be patient and ensure that all water has emptied from the gas heating system and no more water is getting in before you begin any further work.

The work can be hurried up by opening the bleed valves in the top floor metal radiators. When the water is drained off you are free to work on your heating radiator.
